Jamendo Helps My Compilation Project

How cool. Jamendo.com did a blog post on my new compilation project "Oh Brother Take Cover". They said some nice things and hopefully this will spark more movement to the project!

If you spend a little time on jamendo, chances are you already know Sean Fournier. His catchy indie pop songs have been a massive favorite on the site for a while.
Well, now he wants his songs to be covered by a bunch of artists. His new project “Oh Brother Take Cover” will be a compilation of covers of his songs from the album “Oh My“, by various artists. He just doesn’t know who yet.
Interested artists have until the 1st of November to send Sean their versions of his songs. All the info, including lyrics, chords and piano versions of the tracks to make them easier to learn, are available here.

Interview with The Creative Uncommons!

I recently did an interview with The Creative Uncommons, a Creative Commons blog. Very appropriate, you know, since my album is free. Read the interview below.

It seems like all we're lacking here at TCUC is a telescopic lense for our camera and a callous disregard for peoples privacy, because beyond those things we've got all the credentials of a true celeb obsessed chronicle. First Brad Sucks, now Sean Fournier and next up? Elvis perhaps, or Chinese Elvis, whichever one it is who sings in that pub down the road from me. Anyway, for now we'll stick to projecting our loving vibes at Sean Fournier who is, arguably, the most successful adept of the free music arts; especially now that he's reached the pinacle which is an interview on TCUC...

TCUC: Unlikely as it is that someone hasn't heard of you given your status in the Creative Commons world could you give us a quick rundown on who Sean Fournier is?  SF: I am a singer/songwriter from Connecticut. I am unsigned and proud of it. I have no team of agents or anything. There are 2 parts to my music: Me and my fans. I do my own songwriting, recording, producing, website/album artwork, and marketing.  TCUC: And, without slipping into 'what genre are you' style categorisation, which musicians always seem to hate, how would you describe your music?  

SF: I've heard many descriptions. One that I like is, 'soft yet edgy". Gary Allen from the Charlie Daniels Band said, "He reminds me of an early Paul Simon that has no job opportunity for a Garfunkle." My grandmother says my style is "love songs". Without actually naming a genre I would say that my music is Jason Mraz meeting Jack Johnson in a house with Tom Waits peering in through the window.  

TCUC: Your free album 'Oh My' has been incredibly successful so far with 126,000 listens on Jamendo alone, not to mention its spread through all the other outlets you've used for promotion, plus you're still actively trying to get it out there for people to listen to, do you feel like you've 'made it' as a musician? Or is there more left to do?  

SF: I feel very satisfied with where I am right now. I am by no means this huge mainstream artist, but I think the music industry is shifting and artists no longer have to be signed to a label. With the use of the Internet, the power has begun to shift to resourceful unsigned artists. So with that said, then yes, I do feel I've 'made it'. I have signed licensing deals with VH1 and MTV by myself and that, to me, is something that I am very proud of.  

TCUC: As well as being an online hit you've also done extensive live shows, how've you found the experience of performing to a crowd? Something to look forward to? Or just an interlude between the song writing and creation?  

SF: Playing shows is a ton of fun! I love connecting and interacting with fans. I mainly play colleges in the Northeast and it's cool to allow people to hear my music in a different way. I've made the choice to not become a touring artist with the interest of my future wife and family in mind. I do not want to have a family with their father always on the road. So shows will be a fun thing to look forward to here and there.  

TCUC: With 'Oh My' you invested a lot of time, effort and resources into promoting it and getting new listeners, has it been worth it? Is self promotion a viable model for you or are you still keeping half an eye out for that big commercial release?  

SF: It has been more than worth it. If it weren't for 'Oh My', I never would've signed those licensing deals and most of all, never would've gotten my music out there as much as I did. My fanbase practically grew tenfold. My biggest dream for my music right now would be to be featured in a movie or on TV.

  TCUC: You've said that you've got enough material together for a new album, when will it be emerging into the light of day? And what can people expect from it musically?

  SF: I am currently recording another 6-track EP. It will hopefully be seeing the light of day early 2010, realistically. Musically, fans can expect to hear a little acoustic songs, piano, even a slight hint of hip hop. I like to change up styles, so I can guarantee each song will be a little different.  

TCUC: And, to satiate the fans who hate parting with their money, will your next effort be another free release?

  SF: I'm still deciding on that one. I need to somehow support the album financially. I have a few ideas in the works of how I'm going to manage that. I have found that it's much more fun to give things away, but we'll have to see!

  TCUC: From the point of view of the free music community yours is undoubtedly one of the biggest names but you've also gotten a lot of mainstream attention, not least from MTV, which is pretty impressive, do you feel that you'll one day reach the point where you'll move away from the Creative Commons and free music scene to do more within the traditional music world?  

SF: At this point, no. I think the traditional music world isn't all it's cracked up to be. I love giving 'Oh My' for free. I just want people to hear it. That means much more to be than being signed with a label. I just love making music and I want people to help me spread the word. If I can somehow make cover costs and still make it easy to get my music out there, I will be happy.

  TCUC: You've undoubtedly got your own online following going on but do you feel like part of something bigger? There are an increasing number of musicians putting out their work for free, some coming from an established career in the commercial world and most just starting up, is there a sense that you're part of the movement that's emerging here?

SF: I definitely feel like it's part of something big. I think it's going to separate the music industry into those who are out to make money, and those who just want to get their name out there. Don't get me wrong, I would love to make money on my music, but I feel I have to get my music out there even more so. Maybe one day people would donate to the cause or something.  

TCUC: Have you got any particular favourites particular favourites from the free music world?

  SF: I thought it was cool that Coldplay gave out a free live album called, 'Left Right Left Right Left'. Went to one of their concerts and I received it. I thought they were pretty cool.  

TCUC: What's the ultimate goal for Sean Fournier? Where, in a few years time, would you ideally be with your music? Yachts full of groupies and mountains of cash or still dealing with the fans on a more personal level?

  SF: I would love to be able to have such a following that I could record albums at my house, release them, cover my costs, and get featured on soundtracks.  

TCUC: What's the process like when you're making music? Are you out and about searching for inspiration or is it a bit more closed off and personal?  

SF: Alot of my inspiration either comes from personal experience, or I put myself in the shoes of someone going through something. I also write about chasing dreams and even a little on life/death.  

TCUC: You've cited the likes of Coldplay and Damien Rice as favourites before, any others who've helped inspire your music? Or whose music you just love?

  SF: Sufjan Stevens and Aqualung always remind me that you should just make music any way that you want and be yourself. That truly inspires me to do my own thing and be proud of what I do.  

TCUC: And to finish up here, anything you want to say to The Creative UnCommons readers or your fans in general?  

SF: I would love to thank The Creative UnCommons for this opportunity, and to everyone else, please download and spread the word of my free album. I really appreciate the support.

Found this pretty nice review of my free album, Oh My, on this blog called AudioStylites. They review all kinds of free music downloads, so that's pretty cool that I made it into the mix. They say I am very pop. Whatever I am, I'm glad people are getting the word out!

Sean Fournier’s fresh sparkly pop in “Oh My”

What makes pop Pop? Maybe a little acoustic guitar and some Paul Simon-like vocals over a bubbly beat. Maybe some Ben Folds-y vocals backed by acoustic piano melodic lines and broad strings. Maybe love songs with sentimental similes (”If your love was a broken stereo, well I’d be music to your ears.”) Maybe it’s a bunch of ethnic dance loops and some vocoded, auto-tuned vocals.

However you define it, Sean Fournier should be classified under the pop banner. And this 6-song album “Oh My” (his 4th) should be an interesting and fresh addition to the pop idols you already have hiding in your mp3 library. His lyrics are poetic without being cheesy and his music brings you places instead of hammering you into a pulp with the same blocks of overused cliches. Favorites include the ethnic percussion and drama of “Holding the Hand of the Hurricane” and the upbeat sunshine of “Broken Stereo.”
To top it all off, because the album is released under Creative Commons, he’s giving everyone a chance to do cover versions of his songs which he’s releasing as its own album “Oh Brother.” See his cover version project page for more details.

I'm excited to hear what people will record. It's always interesting to see what kind of personal spin someone puts on a song when they are covering music. This project aims to celebrate the diversity among my listeners. Whether the cover songs are rap, country, electronica, or whatever... It should make for an interesting project.

Showcasing at NACA Northeast 2009!

Wow. I am really excited to announce that I will be showcasing at this years NACA Northeast Conference! This will be my third year going to the conference. I showcased my first year, so I was ineligible for the second. I applied for this year's showcase and I definitely did not think I would be selected this go-round, but I am truly grateful!

'Another Like You' Reached Top 500 in Billboard World Song Contest

I recently received another Honorable Mention in the 16th Annual Billboard World Song Contest! My song, 'Another Like You' placed among the top 500! I was honored to be recognized in the top 1,500 with my 'Broken Stereo' song a week or so ago, so this, of course, is an awesome feeling to place even higher!

I got this nice certificate in the mail yesterday from Billboard saying that my song 'Broken Stereo' won honorable mention in the 16th Annual Billboard World Song Contest! That is awesome news and it feels great to be recognized. I was among the top 1,500 so I also received some guitar strings.

Jamendo's Active Community

I have to give a nice high-five to Jamendo.com for having the best community out of all music sites I have seen. As a musician, I love hearing what people think about my music that I'm putting out there. The users on Jamendo actually give their opinions and rate the albums they listen to. To me, a fan's opinion holds way more weight than a record executive. Fans are the greatest supporters of music.

A few years ago, when iTunes was a great focus for me, I was taken back by the fact that not many people were rating how they felt about the album. So you can imagine how excited I was to receive a few reviews a week over at Jamendo!

Currently I have over 200 reviews in numerous languages including French, Dutch, Spanish, Russian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, and of course, English.

Just thought I'd give a credit where it's due.

When Will the Plague End?

I was putting stickers on my last box of Oh My albums last night and was wondering if I would order more tangible CDs again. I had 2,000+ made and have only a few hundred left. I love taking them to shows and passing them out as if I have an endless supply, but in reality, the financial burden would be too great to carry for a large amount of time. If I could, I would constantly replenish the supply. I will play it by ear.

The next step is to pass out download cards in the absence of the tangible album. It would still serve the purpose of getting my free album out to the people, but isn't as good as physically handing them a CD and telling them to listen. This would add an extra step getting people to download, but it would be cheaper than buying CDs.

Until then, I will continue on my quest to get the album to new listeners. I also wanted to take this take to thank everyone who has supported me in getting the word out there!

Licensed to Major TV Shows

I am thrilled to finally say that I licensed my entire album of 'Oh My' to a few major TV shows. I have known about this for about a week or two, but didn't want to say anything until I signed the contracts.

The shows are The Real World, Road Rules, Real World / Road Rules Extreme / All-Star Challenge, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, a Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian spin-off show, Bad Girls Club, and The Stylist. These shows exist across the networks MTV, E!, and Oxygen.

I am not sure if they will notify me if my music is placed, so PLEASE contact me if they do. This is a huge deal to me and it would be a dream come true. I am soo excited. So keep your eyes and ears on the look-out and tell your friends too!

Making 'Put the World On Stop'

Making my first album, 'Put the World On Stop', was a great achievement for me. I was thinking back to when I was making it and thought I'd share a little bit.

Recording the Album

I recorded 'Put the World On Stop' in a couple of dorm rooms while I was in college. It took about two years to complete the album and over that span I moved a couple of times. I had no money to really produce the album. I hardly had any equipment - Not even a microphone. I recored the whole album on an iMac and that little hole in the monitor was my microphone. I had a guitar, a keyboard, and everything was recorded using Garageband. Dorms are not the best environment for recording an album. I would have to constantly redo recording sessions because a door would slam down the hall or someone would yell. I would have to plug up the vents with t-shirts and tape because they were too noisy.

Naming the Album
The album is called 'Put the World On Stop' because that was the name of the first song completed. It was also the meaning of the song that inspired the decision. 'Put the World On Stop' (the song) is about taking time out of your life to follow your dreams. Since making the album was a dream of mine, it was an easy choice to name the album.

Designing the Album

As I mentioned before, the album took a few years to record. I was always "in the process". Little by little I would plug away at it. One day it was just surprisingly finished. I needed cover art but had nothing and I needed it quick because I was so eager to send the album to be manufactured. I had been working on a design of a bear to be my new logo for my music and so I quickly put together a simple design using that. Before I knew it, my album was completed.

Compared to Coldplay!

So, I went to a Coldplay concert in Hartford, Connecticut this weekend and was completely blown away. They put on such a great show and gave a free album to everyone! I've been a huge fan of Coldplay for years and years, so you can imagine how flattered I was when I read the latest post from AQuasiGeekette, comparing me to them!

The post talks about music promotion by giving music out for free, whether it be an album or some kind of performance. Jason Mraz and Imogen Heap are mentioned in the post as well.

What do these two artists have in common? Well, you might know and even be a huge fan of Coldplay and may not have ever heard of Sean Fournier. Well what they both have in common is awesome music and a free album give away. I found Fournier on thesixtyone.com His track - 'Put the world on stop' was one of the tracks I ended up loving on the site. You can imagine the smile on my face when I found out that he was giving away that album for free. I found something written about me in a Turkish blog. I do not know exactly what it says, but my translator gave me a rough idea. Basically, it talks about the Internet and how it gives small-time musicians (such as myself) a global market. The blog post is evidence in itself! Somewhere in Turkey, someone is listening to music that I made in my room in America. Very very cool! The post continues to go on about my music and different websites that I am on.

True to her word, Laura Bradford of Max Bumps, wrote a review of me and my album, Oh My. Max Bumps is a fan blog for The Sixty One, a very cool website that makes the music culture more democratic. Below is what she wrote for the Max Bumps blog:

CD Review: Sean Fournier, Oh My
Hey. I'm Laura Bradford, better known as kilexia on thesixtyone.

I've always been amazed by musicians who create albums on their own, and yet still manage to pack in as much sound as an entire band--heck, sometimes an entire orchestra.

Sean Fournier is such an artist. He's rather new on thesixtyone, but his songs routinely pass 1,000 hearts. And, in an effort to spread the word about his music, he's offering his fourth album, Oh My, for free.

The six tracks are mostly re-recordings of previously released songs, with the exception of the new song "Holding the Hand of the Hurricane." Here's the track listing:

1. Broken Stereo (Accoustic Version)
2. Put The World on Stop (Piano Version)
3. Another Like You (Piano Version)
4. Goodbye (Piano Version)
5. Falling For You (Piano Version)
6. Holding the Hand of the Hurricane

His sound is hard to pin down. I want to say he's a little like The Fray or Quiet Company, but really, the music defies comparison.

The album starts off with "Broken Stereo," a sweet, bouncy, tender love song. The next song, "Put the World on Stop" sparkles with piano melodies; it's a great track for spring, and it's going to see a lot of play on my Mp3 player.

"Another Like You" hums and vibrates with strings, and "Goodbye" shows off his skill at keys.

"Falling For You" feels like a finale for the album, and "Holding the Hand of the Hurricane," an encore. "Hurricane" is bold and percussive, putting on a show of sound that mimics a summer storm.

Overall, Sean Fournier has great vocals, lyrics, and instrumentation. I hope his efforts at promotion work out, because he deserves to be a big success.

Initial Designs for 'What I Must Do' Music Video

Designing the look and feel for the 'What I Must Do' was definitely a process. The concept was something that stayed the same throughout though. I knew I wanted the main character to be standing still the entire time with things going on behind him. I thought the vision of changing the seasons in reverse was a cool way to show that time was passing. Basically, in the story of the song, it is about a guy waiting there for his love.

Phase 1

In this phase, the main character was outside and around him the seasons would change. The flowers would grow and die and the leaves would fall and grow again. The style is very surreal in that it is drawn like a cartoon, but real images are used for the tie, shirt, skin, grass, branches, leaves, etc.

Phase 2

For this second phase, I changed my mind and wanted the setting to be more of a theatre or a school play. It kept the same concept, but I thought I'd have more fun in this arena. But something still felt wrong. I later decided to make the look and feel more like the album art.

I kept the whole "school play" theme and concept and made it consistent with the artwork.

UPDATE! (5/9/09)

I didn't explain this in my original post because I thought it might be too complex, but I'll give it a shot since the flashback footage might seem out of place for some viewers. Basically, the video tells the story of a guy and a girl walking out into a winter storm. (The storm is basically a metaphor for a rough patch in a relationship.) Anyway, he videotapes their trek and along the way he loses her to another. He makes it home and writes a song about how he will wait forever for her and makes a cartoon music video to tape over the footage of him and his ex-girlfriend walking through the storm. The video messes up somehow and doesn't fully tape over everything (hence the flashback). I can definitely understand if it seems out of place for some people, but I like it :)

Alternate Design for 'Put the World On Stop' CD

The original album for 'Put the World On Stop' was manufactured as a thin jewel case. I had no money at the time and it was the coolest thing that I could do with the little money that I had. When all of the CDs were sold, I needed to order more, but instead of ordering the thin jewel cases again, I wanted to make them as jackets. I also wanted to re-design some elements as well.

I was torn between two designs: The big star or the bear. I ended up going with the bear, but I still have heart for the star one so I thought I'd share. Below is the design I ended up going with.

I thought that it was cool that my lyrics stood out enough to someone to do this. I was clicking around on the site and saw the other featured lyrics and they have a bit more graphic elements and big fonts to them where mine was tiny and simple, but I think it's perfect. It's a simple statement and it doesn't need to be big to get the point across.

Today I was notified by Steve from a blog called Catching the Waves of a nice review/break-down of my 'Oh My' album.

A Face In The Crowd
That cover is a slice of summer, isn't it? Curiously, the album's six songs are tagged as “blues”. That's a misnomer, pop-pickers, for Oh My is folk-pop and perhaps the cheeriest album ever to appear at Catching The Waves.

Oh My is composed of newly recorded versions of select songs from Sean Fournier's two commercial albums, Put The World On Stop and Paper Tiger. All the tracks are fine examples of the songwriter's art – well, they got me singing along with them. (My neighbours love me.) It enjoys a stellar vocal mix, although a more sonorous piano would strengthen the sound considerably. However, there's nothing wrong with the sparkling guitar in Broken Stereo, a jaunty opener that will give you a suntan.

Speaking of pop, Goodbye's call-and-respond cadence between piano chords and vocals seems to have occupied the pop charts for the last few years, and Sean is also guilty of committing that crime against music, Autotune, on Holding The Hand Of The Hurricane. But the charm of Oh My is that any minor faults are laid waste by pure, infectious melodies and touchingly optimistic lyrics.

If MTV or VH1 were to get hold of Holding The Hand Of The Hurricane, it would no doubt remaster it and then set it to a video of a rainswept raven-tressed lass running through lightning-lit cobbled streets: its air of gothic/Latin romance demands no less. And, would you believe it, MTV & VH1 recently licensed Oh My, so keep your eyes peeled. If they do set it to said video, I shall buy a lottery ticket.

Another Like You is a beautiful, sensitive, piano and cello-laden paean to true love. Send it to your other half and they'll let you touch them in their naughty place.

If you happen to need cheering up, listen to Put The World On Stop, an upbeat tale of recovery from ennui that will put you in a good frame of mind:

One time before the curtain drops

I'm all right, I'm all right

Today's recommended song is the final one, Falling For You, which you should file under “Exemplary Good-Natured Catchy Love Song” in your music collection. Oh My is currently riding high at Jamendo; here's their natty music player so that you can ignore me and play the songs in whatever order you damn well please:

You're right – I still can't get Jamendo to tell me how to insert one, and one only, mp3 in Yahoo's media player. *shakes fist at cruel world* Jamendo is fast becoming the iTunes of the Creative Commons music world. Let's hope that's a good thing.

Sean Fournier currently has a single, What I Must Do, on release. There's also lyrics, videos and more info available at his very pretty website. You'll see that he's also a talented graphic artist. Yup, I'm envious.

Slap a couple of extra songs on Oh My, get a top producer to polish the sound and there's no reason why it shouldn't enjoy an outing in the upper reaches of the charts. (Failing that, please investigate Sean's two commercial albums if you wish to hear an alternative fuller mix of these songs.) If you know someone who likes to sing into their hairbrush, tell them about this album. Then tell them that it's a tribute to the last words of James T. Kirk. We geeks are evil.

I had an awesome time at the show and it was everything that I was expecting! The crowd was energetic and supportive. I had a few familiar faces in the crowd and I felt very lucky to have them there! The staff was very friendly and welcoming. They even gave me a mug, which I will definitely get some use out of. Overall, I had a great time at Bridgewater and I hope to play there again someday. Old Bear Poster Found

I found this old poster that I designed back in April of 2007. It was never used for anything, but the original thought was to mass produce it and use it for an 'upcoming shows' poster. I would write the show information in the dark brown area in the lower part of the poster. The bear, I remember, was a direct lift off of the 'Put the World On Stop' album art. The bear was, and still is, a very symbolic thing for my music.

Initial 'Oh My' Website Design

When I was originally thinking of the look for the 'Oh My' website and album, everything had this sketched-out feel. I wanted it to look like everything had been drawn with a blue pen. I remember thinking of even having pictures of me integrated with the blue ink, like drawn vines wrapping around my leg, and stuff like that. The sketched logo that was used for the album art was definitely derived from this idea. Just shows you the train of thought.

The website has come a long way from this original idea and I'm definitely happy with the outcome.

So there I was, sitting in my car; driving home from work and I was thinking of what I wanted the album cover to be for my free CD. I wanted it to be simple and almost iconic. For every release up until this point, I would use either a cartoon or illustration of some sort. My friends were giving me flak, saying that I should use a real picture for the next cover. So, I decided to compromise, I will use my face, but I will illustrate it. So, I took a picture of myself right then and there with my iPhone.

When I got home, I traced it and put my name in. Suddenly, I had not only a start to my album design, but something that I could use in the future as a logo.

Before the watercolor look and feel of the 'Oh My' cover, I was going for more of a simple approach. I originally wanted everything to be blue. The artwork was changed from the blue to white and watercolor was added in. It still achieves the simple look, but is a bit more interesting.

The watercolor is supposed to symbolize my music leaving it's mark on the world; almost as if I wrote 'Sean was here'.

I came across a nice little write-up on a blog called Sounds of Silence. They talking about the changing music industry and my free album 'Oh My'.

Music Monday—Sean Fournier
This is one artist I’ve been meaning to feature for a while now. I mostly like this guy (in addition to his music :P) for reflecting the changing role of music and how we use it today. Everyone has to acknowledge that the transition to digital media has taken a huge swipe at music. And despite the attempts to restrict sharing music (and regardless of ethical issues and whatnot), there really isn’t a sure way to stop it. So guess what? It’s going to keep happening.

An issue like this is one where most draw (or don’t draw) a line for themselves. For example, if you buy or download a cd, is it OK to copy those files to your computer, iPod, laptop, backup cd, etc? Is it ok to give that backup cd to a friend—who doesn’t plan on buying the material himself? Without defining where that line actually is or should be, the truth is we all know this stuff happens all the time.

Online sources like Project Playlist, IMEEM, Myspace and iLike help music seekers determine what they like and dislike before they have to commit to a purchase. Even so, most people don’t really want to buy music that they aren’t going to end up listening to, or even liking.

And getting back to Sean Fournier, like many new up and coming artists, he is giving away his music for free.

New artists really can't expect people to go out and buy the music of someone they've never heard of. But offer some free downloads, and you just might create a following that can get you someone in the music world today. More on this will come later, but for now...enjoy Sean Fournier.

I got a really cool email from someone I went to school with back in the day. She went to Australia and took some pictures of the 'Oh My' poster in front of the Sydney Opera House and a few kangaroos! I like these pictures alot!

Ninja Turtle on a String

My nephew, Jakob, was over this past weekend and my mom broke out a bin of my old toys from when I was a boy. The bin was mainly filled with old Hot Wheels cars and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I hadn't seen these toys in a very long time, but there they were. Jakob had taken a liking to the cars. I looked down at the Ninja Turtles and picked one up. To my surprise, I saw that it still had a string tied to it! (Please reference Second Floor Battleground in my 25 Random Things About My Childhood post.) Even the smallest of bins can become the biggest time capsule.

Stickering the Free Album

I spent some time the other putting the 'This Album is FREE Spread it Like the Plague' stickers on the 'Oh My' album. This is by no means any big news. It's, in fact, quite tedious and boring, BUT I was tossing the finished CDs into a box and I thought it looked cool. That is all.

Hopefully these CDs will be scattered throughout the world and not just in a box in my room.

To answer the question of how you can help spread the word by passing out CDs. I would love to give people a pile of CDs to hand out, but they are too expensive for me to ship. 'Oh My' Trial and Error

I was cleaning out my car this weekend and decided it was time to get rid of my stack of 'Oh My' trial and error CDs. For months, I would record and tweak songs for the album. Every time I made a change I would burn it to a CD and listen in the car. If you can make music sound good in a car, it'll sound pretty good through any other speaker. Every day I'd add another trial CD to the pile and make changes.

It's a long process, but I'm happy with the outcome!

The show went well! The crowd was mainly made up of teenagers, which was different for me because I'm used to playing at colleges. I'm also used to playing to a seated audience, but it was cool that people were standing in a semi-circle around the stage. Very cool. It was nice to see that some of them were singing along. Overall, it was a good night!

'Oh My' Photoshoot!

Check out the 'Oh My' Photoshoot.

I've been meaning to do a photoshoot for my free album, Oh My, for quite some time. The concept of the photoshoot is heavily inspired from the album art, which features a white background and colorful watercolor paint. The paint signifies the music being spread and leaving it's mark wherever it may go. For the shoot, I took it to the next level by literally having the paint spread from my body. Basically, if I put my hand up to a wall, the paint spreads from my hand and colors the wall.

I teamed up with photographer, Michael Maler, this past February and we brought the idea of the photoshoot to life! Michael is an awesome photographer who has worked with Dashboard Confessional, Plain White T's and Willie Nelson to name a few! I have posted 5 pictures to my flickr and will be posting about 4 or 5 more when I'm done! Check out the 'Oh My' Photoshoot.

I'll be playing at Emerson College on April 21, 2009! It will be my second time playing there and I am excited to go back! The show starts at 5pm and I'll be playing for a little while. I'll be there promoting my free album, some new songs and some other songs off of the previous albums!

UPDATE! (4/22/09)

Once I made it to Boston and finally found the venue I was feeling less anxious. I was supposed to go on at 5pm, but there was a scheduling error in booking the theatre and there was a choir class in there until 5:45pm! The food for the show was all set up and there were people waiting to see the show... We were going to postpone the show to a later date, but at the last minute we decided that the show must go on. It all turned out pretty good by the end of it. I went on at 6pm and played for an hour. Everyone was really cool about sticking around for the performance. I did not have a set-list this time so I was playing whatever song or story that popped into my head. I played most of the songs on the 'Oh My' album and some older and newer songs as well. I also tried playing 'What I Must Do' on acoustic so that was cool to give that a whirl. Overall, it was a good show and I'm glad it went well. Thank you to Elin for the planning, all of those involved with the show, and everyone who took the time to listen! :)

My music video for 'What I Must Do' got some attention on Audioholic Media! I'm glad to see that people are giving it a chance :)

Sean Fournier Premieres Adorable Video for “What I Must Do”
Last month we introduced you to Sean Fournier. This month he has released the video for his song, “What I Must Do.” Of the song, Fournier states, “‘What I Must Do’ is a small song with a big heart. Piano and strings help tell the story of a couple walking home through a snow storm and what would happen if they lost each other along the way.”

The video also has a big heart. Starring a little animated guy in a scarf, the sun rises and sets as the seasons change while he blinks and waits for his lady to return.

It’s adorable, and sweet, and sad.
… I also like the little creature in the knot of the tree on the left.

In addition to all of that other stuff we were impressed by last month, add video-making to the list. Sean Fournier is a machine, and he just keeps getting better.

My TheSixtyOne.com Experiment

I was looking at my profile over on thesixtyone.com and saw that there are alot of things going on. It seems every piece of the page is made of up these tiny thumbnails and I wanted to do something to my page to make it stand out a little more. When you upload pictures to your page, it makes tiny thumbnails out of them too, so I wanted to see if I can make one larger picture out of the other thumbnails... The experiment worked! Since the site is based off of clicking on heart icons, I made a giant heart with my 'This album is free, spread it like the plague' message.

I came across a very nice review of my album Oh My on sputnikmusic.com, a website specializing in music reviews. The album was given a 4.5 superb rating, which is fantastico.

Sean Fournier, Oh My - 4.5
I have no idea who Sean Fournier is, and statistically, you have no idea either. The Connecticut-born, self-taught, lyric-driven singer-songwriter has been carting his Free EP, Oh My with the tagline "This album is free: spread it like the plague," and never before have I been so motivated to spread the word about an artist. Oh My is overflowing with cheery melodies, winsome lyrics and bouncy progressions without becoming irritatingly sweet. The six songs included on this EP are a combination of reworked originals and newer compositions, and each track excels beautifully. Economically, Oh My will not cost you one cent, and it would be frighteningly idiotic of you not to download this record immediately. Allow me to convince you...

To put Sean Fournier into a genre (or subgenre) is certainly no challenging task -- with sugary melodies and jaunty chord patterns, Fournier's voice dips and dives out of playful lyrics that do not hesitate to remind you of industry giants Matt Costa and Jack Johnson. However familiar the music may sound, even through the occasional digital altering of Fournier's voice, Oh My feels more organic and honest than even the sincerest of Johnson's tunes. With songs like the comfortably poppy Broken Stereo, or the equally engaging love-balled of Another Like You, uncommon instrumentation bleed over sportive piano progressions and almost-bluesy acoustic guitars. Through the eclectic use of bizarre loops, the occasional electronic drum, and often, what sounds like a clavichord, Fournier constructs a facetious musical catalog that keeps the listener engaged with it's unpredictable mannerisms.

The musical experimentation on Oh My is most obviously characterized by the record's two strongest tracks, Goodbye and Holding the Hand of the Hurricane, which scroll through intoxicating melodies and galvanized electronic drums. Through a surprisingly un-annoying use of the infamous Auto-Tune, both songs manage to communicate originality and lyrical ingenuity while effectively employing foreign percussion and harmonies. The latter of these two songs presents a very exotic sounding backdrop, partnering Fournier's smooth tenor voice with flutes, bongos and nonnative background vocals, creating one of those most creative and enchanting songs in music today.

In a more familiar fashion, Fournier functions just as well in indie-pop, such as the opener Broken Stereo, which originally appeared late in his sophomore release Paper Tiger. With kittenish lyrics (If your life was a broken stereo, well, I'd be music to your ears) and casual vocals, it is songs like this that are obnoxious and harrowing to a saddened soul, but the absolute perfect song for somebody in a light mood -- and there lies the essence of Oh My: it's bouncy, it's playful, it's cheerful and if that's not your cup of coffee, than you shouldn't be having caffeine anyways. Besides, the combination of caffeine and Sean Fournier results in a dangerous amount of giddiness, and it probably shouldn't be attempted in the first place.

In conclusion, there isn't a fault on this record (okay, maybe the occasional AutoTune is irking), and as long as it's costing you nothing at all, there is absolutely no reason why it shouldn't be nestling up in your cozy hard drive. I promise, you won't be disappointed -- or your money back. Get it? I know. Hilarious.

Sean Fournier - Oh My EP
Sean was nice enough to contact me himself looking for his music to be heard. I've neglected to take the time to listen to his 6 track EP for the better part of 2 months. Sorry Sean. You deserve better. That's as close as I can do for a public apology. A talented singer-songwriting musician, Sean's music most resembles the likes of Jason Mraz and Damien Rice. It's poppy nature and light-hearted tunes will probably make you believe his tunes would fit nicely on any TV show that Alexandra Patsavas works on. You know the scenes; during the transition that always show the city landscape and sets the mood for what's about to occur. While not mining new territory of relationships, love, longing et al his phrasing and lyrics are quite engaging. His varied use of tracking, different percussion sounds and strings keeps the music interesting. His voice is equally smooth to the company mentioned above and maybe Jack Johnson thrown in -- minus the Hawaiian surfer vibe. I'm interested to see how it evolves and matures.

I've been meaning to make an animated music video for my song What I Must Do. Video-making certainly isn't my specialty, but I've been learning as I go with a program called After Effects. I'm taking 2-Dimentional artwork from the album cover design and I bringing it into After Effects where I can turn it into a 3-Dimentional environment. It's pretty cool. I will post it up on YouTube when it is complete!

We recently completed a review of Sean Fournier's free CD, and we are excited to present this ultra cool spotlight. Enjoy!

Isaac: Hi Sean, thanks for taking the time to complete this interview with us. How do you sum up 2008 for you as a Singer/Songwriter?
Sean: 2008 was my best year so far! I came out with a free album entitled 'Oh My' to spread the word of my music. Most of my efforts were going towards the recording of that album and then the marketing once it was released.

Isaac: What do you feel was your biggest accomplishment for 2008?
Sean: My music has been spread like the plague! So many people were downloading the free album and passing on the word of my music. People are writing in blogs, making videos, talking about it on social networks
. I've been contacted by listeners all around the world. I even got a call from a guy at VH1! Someone had given him a CD and next thing I know; I'm signing a licensing deal. The biggest accomplishment for 2008 was starting that snowball effect.

Isaac: Elaborate a little about whom were your biggest influences in the music industry and why?
Sean: I've always been a fan of Coldplay because they create such beautiful music that evokes emotion. My music is different from theirs, but I try to have the same emotion with my songs.

Isaac: Let's talk about what you feel you will bring to the music industry?
Sean: Well for starters, I am an unsigned artist. I don't want to be signed. I love to make music at home, I love to design my albums and websites, and I love marketing. When people email me, I do everything I can to write back. Connecting with the listeners is very important to me and I try to keep the communication a 2-way street. It's what the music industry needs.

Isaac: If you had an opportunity to work with one artist or group, who would it be and why?
Sean: Probably Eminem. I think that would be the coolest thing ever. I've been a fan of his for years and it would be cool to do a collaboration with him.

Isaac: How would you describe your music to others?
Sean: I usually say its lyrically-driven folk/pop. I then continue by saying that I play the acoustic guitar. And if that doesn't paint the picture, I paint them a picture of me playing the acoustic guitar.

Isaac: What is your definition for Acoustic Music?
Sean: I usually consider acoustic the opposite of electric. It's much simpler. No distortion.

Isaac: What type of feedback have you received from your previous releases?
Sean: I've been getting pretty positive feedback. People have said so many nice things about the album. And that, of course, makes my day! I LOVE hearing from people. Most of the feedback is that they loved the album and they are passing it on to their friends. It's awesome.

Isaac: What can fans expect from your latest CD, you are working on currently? What is the inspiration behind the CD?
Sean: The latest CD is a small collection of new versions of songs. The previous versions are on the first two albums. Most of the new versions are played on piano and make use of strings and acoustic guitar.

Isaac: Where can fans locate you at online?
Sean: I try to write in my blog every day (http://www.sean-fournier.com/blog). From there, you can find me on FaceBook, MySpace, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr... and the list goes on and on! And of course, my official website (http://www.sean-fournier.com/).

Isaac: What can fans expect from Sean Fournier in 2009?
Sean: I am currently planning another album. Most of the songs are written. I just need to record them. I'm trying to do a few more videos this year. I might release a single or two.

Isaac: Time for some shout outs to your family, friends, and fans?
Sean: Thank you to Kim and all of my family and friends! Special thank you to all of my fans for being awesome and crazy supportive!

Jamming in Hawaii: Weathervane (Live)

A few of my friends and I went to Hawaii in Jauary 2006 to visit a friend. We ended up going to this bar that had an open mic. I went up there and played a few songs with some random guys. There was a drummer, a bassist, and a saxophone player. They never heard my stuff before so I think it was a pretty good improv!

This rare footage is the only clip that I have of that night. I think it was taken on a cell phone or something. The sound isn't the best quality, but you get the picture. It features the song Weathervane.

I was named the Unsigned Artist of the Week (3/15/09-3/22/09) over at The Fleshy Fresh. I'm enjoying the week so far! This blog is basically about "music so good you can't help but pass out". Well, I'm glad to be considered in that mix and it's cool to make people pass out with my music. As long as it doesn't happen at the live shows. That could get awkward. thesixtyone.com is Nice!

I recently joined a pretty cool music community website called thesixtyone. Basically, if listeners like a certain song that they hear they support it buy clicking on a little heart icon next to the song. The more people support, the higher in the charts the song gets. The chart toppers get to go on the homepage and of course get even more exposure. I think it is cool because you can visit the homepage and listen to music that people support.

Furthermore, listeners can gain points by discovering good music. If you support a song, everyone who supports that song after you will get you points. So the trick is to discover the good songs first. That way you will get more points. I think that system is awesome. Unlike Top 40 radio, the top music is decided by the listeners -- the way it should be.

Promotion Over the Ocean: Netherlands

My friends over at SingerSongwriterMusic.nl have been helping me out by spreading the word of my music in the Netherlands. They have featured me as an artist on their page, posted an exclusive interview, and have been syndicating some of my news - all in Dutch, of course. To take a step even further, they will be trying to help me out on the radio end of things and will be trying to plug my song Broken Stereo (Acoustic Version) as the first single!

This is exciting for me and I hope things go well over there. I will keep you posted if anything comes of it.

Here I go, getting called 'crazy' again! Haha. But as long as I'm getting grouped in with the likes of Radiohead and Trent Reznor, I'm fine with it. My friends over there at trueAnthem wrote a pretty nice blog post about me, free music and how it will effect the music industry.

trueAnthem's Sean Fournier does something "absolutely crazy": giving his music away for FREE!

Sean Fournier sings is his openings track:

All we can say is...did this woman not hear Sean SING?

I mean, hello? I am already archiving him in my library of clever, sexy, talented singer-songwriter boys. On iTunes, of course...my black book is not *that* organized. ;)

Sean's bio read that he is a "lyrically-driven singer/songwriter." With this, we agree. He is most certainly a master of world play and surprisingly/equally crafty in comparison to his contemporaries (Jason Mraz, Jack Johnson, Michael Franti). We hear lots of good, juicy influences successfully realized here.

Sean's bio continues, he is apparently, on a "quest." We like this.
He has a "pocket full of songs." This, we might subtly correct...pocket full of MAGIC, seems more appropriate. ;)

Self-taught at guitar, piano, and ukelele. "Soft, yet edgy presence." Okay...can we just MARRY this boy? Or, at least, at the very least...take him home to meet our parents?

Thankfully, for ALL of us, Sean has decided to "do something absolutely crazy" and GIVE AWAY HIS LATEST RELEASE!

Did you hear that? He is GIVING his MUSIC AWAY! What a novel idea...I mean FOR REALS.

Even Radiohead had trouble with the free model. "Pay what you can," they suggested. About 70% of their greatest fans, apparently, couldn't afford to pay a darn thing. The rest paid 5 bucks.

Our response?

Let's go absolutely crazy! Sean Fournier, thank you for reminding us. Music is now FREE. And best given away.

Perhaps, the fall of the music industry as we once knew it (remember the days? dropping 60 bucks at Tower for 3 CDs, each with 1, maybe 2 songs that you actually liked and could listen to on them...)

BUT WE DIGRESS. After all, no artist or music lover likes to read the latest headlines about the industry.

What we DO like to see, however, is God, himself, in action.

Yes, artists like Sean Fournier remind us that perhaps the new price of music (free)...is how it was always meant to be.

After all, most great songwriters will tell you that they do not quite "write" their songs. The best writers channel their music. Receive it...let it fall off their sleeves" (Joni Mitchell once said).

Music, at its best, is a gift from the Gods...

So, perhaps it should be free?

My New Bear Shirt

This is the first shirt that I ever designed that I actually feel comfortable wearing. Usually, my designs are branded with my name and I always feel weird wearing them.

A month or so ago I started designing t-shirts to sell on RedBubble.com. The good thing about that is, I can design as many shirts as I want and they will make them when someone buys one. That way I don't have a room full of inventory. The downside is that I kind of like physically having the shirts to bring to shows. I've been making a few sales of the 'Bear' t-shirt and decided to get one for myself to see how it looks. I'm definitely liking it! I'm excited that it actually came out pretty nice.

Plague Update: 6 Months Later

It has been about six months since the release of my free album, Oh My, and I must say that I never expected that it would be such a success. As some of you may know, the main goal of this album was to simply get my name out there. It's been doing a pretty good job so far! It's hard to get exact numbers, but the album has over 45,000 downloads and my website is being visited from countries around the world. I have extended my fan base exponentially and have been getting awesome feedback from listeners and celebrities! The album has found itself in the hands of people over at MTV and VH1, which hopefully will get my music on television. I have gotten numerous mentions in blogs and music website across the web. Overall, this campaign has been a huge success for me, so, thank you!

The main goal of my free album was to spread the word of my music. I was getting such a good response that I had an idea to feature my listeners in a video and show just how far the word of my free album was spreading. My original plan was to make just a simple slideshow along with one of my songs. But the pictures that I received were really cool and I wanted to do something special with them...

I want to take this time to thank everyone who participated and sent in their pictures! I appreciate all of the support! I also wanted to send a huge thank you to Nat Sweeney for helping me make this video!

I came out with this song in 2008 and it was immediately pushed into the shadow of my free album 'Oh My'. I really am crazy proud of this song and I want people to hear it! It will be on my next album and I hope to make a video for it... The story of this song takes place in the middle winter so I thought it was an appropriate time to talk about it!

'What I Must Do' is a small song with a big heart. Piano and strings help tell the story of a couple walking home through a snow storm and what would happen if they lost each other along the way.

Show at Nichols College (2/26/09)

I have a show tonight at the lovely Nichols College up in Dudley, Massachusetts. The show starts at 7PM in the Bison's Den and I'll be playing for an hour or so. I'll be there promoting my free album, some new songs and some other songs off of the previous albums!

UPDATE! (3/1/09)

So the show went very well. I played for an hour and a half at this placed called the Bison's Den. It was an old bar setting and it made for an intimate performance. When I have to play more than an hour and a half I get nervous because I'm afraid that I will run out of songs. So along the way I try to tell some stories about the songs or whatever to fill some time. I'm not much of a talker, but I try. Thankfully, I was able to touch upon all of the songs that I wanted to play.

Apparently, the venue used to be a campus hot spot long ago, but since they stopped serving alcohol the attendance dwindled down. They were trying to build it up again by having musicians play there so I am glad that they considered me! I am also very thankful that people came out and listened to my stuff! Thanks again!

25 Random Things About My Childhood

Ninja Turtle Mud Pit
I used to take my Ninja Turtles into the backyard and pretend that the bad guy took them prisoner. I would take the hose and stick it into the ground and make a mud pit. One by one the bad guy made them go into the pit. I would leave them there all afternoon until the sun dried the pit completely and the Ninja Turtles were stuck in the ground.

Second Floor Battleground
I'd pick two toys that had to battle until death. I would open the window to my room on the second floor. I'd take the screen out. Then, the two toys would begin to fight. The loser would eventually fall to the cement below. Most of them lost limbs. Sometimes I'd really like a toy and wouldn't want them to die, so I'd tie a string around their foot. I still have those toys somewhere broken and covered in dirt.

Superman Slide
This one time, I legit thought that if I jumped off the top of the slide, I could fly. And so I climbed to the top and leaped straight horizontally out (just like Superman). I hit the ground hard and hurt my right hand.

The Stuntman
I had a pair of toy handcuffs. And I would take my bike to the top of the hill of my street. I'd handcuff myself to the handlebars and ride my bike down aiming for the tree in the front yard. I would have to slip out of the handcuffs and leap from my bike before it hit the tree. I used to do this over and over.

Seanball
I made up this game called Seanball. I would play it when I had no one else to play with. I would throw a tennis ball against the foundation of my house and when it bounced back, I'd have to save it from going in between these two pencils that I stuck in the ground as goalposts. Not only did I make up teams to play each other, I made logos and players up. I would keep their stats and literally have seasons.

Cookies in the Shower
I used to take cookies in the shower. I don't know why. It just seemed cool at the time.

Mini Tape Recorder
I recorded Michael Jackson's Thriller on my mini tape recorder and played it while I took showers.

Melted Ice Cream
I would always put my ice cream in the microwave to melt it down to almost liquid. Seems kind of gross now.

Entrepreneur
One winter I made a big snowball and hid it in the freezer of my basement. When summer came, I took it out and walked the neighborhood to try to sell it. I sold it for $5 to a kid who later threw it at his little brother.

Rock Jumper
The park near my house put these big rocks along one side of the field. That day I took my friend as my witness and I jumped from rock to rock without touching the ground. I wanted to be the first one.

Cartoonist
My childhood dream was to become a cartoonist. I wanted to be the next Walt Disney.

Sabrina
I had a cat named Sabrina for most of my childhood. I loved her. She would follow me to school and I'd have to walk her back home because I was afraid she'd get lost. I also had a stuffed animal that looked just like her and I named that Sabrina too.

The Fisherman
I was in a Georgia fishing magazine when I was 11 years old. I caught a bunch of largemouth bass at my grandfather's lake.

My First Black Eye
I was 2 months old. My mom was changing me and my sister accidentally ran into the wall. It shook the shelf above me and a bottle fell right onto my eye. I had to get stitches and I had a black eye. The feud with my sister began at that moment.

Tonka Truck
My sister was watching TV and I came up behind her and hit her in the back of the head with one of those big metal Tonka trucks. When asked why I did it. I confessed to my dad that two weeks earlier, she wouldn't let me watch my show.

Tied To A Tree
My sister was leaning against a tree and I asked her to hold the end of my kit string. I ran around the tree as many times as I could. She was laughing but soon realized that she couldn't get free. I went inside and mocked her from the window. Then, I felt guilty and let her go.

Never Listened to Music
When I was little, I would never listen to music that often. My sister did though. I remember asking my sister if I'd ever like music. She assured me that I would.

The Secret Forts
I would find these secret hiding spots around my yard and neighborhood. I called them forts. I used to pretend I was on some undercover mission for the government.

My Sword is a Pen
My mom had gotten this new pen. It was a smooth writing liquid ink one. I thought it was cool. Anyway, my mom was away at the store and I came across the pen. I picked up the pen and started pretending that I was in a sword fight. I must've been moving around and swinging it for five minutes. I heard her car come back in the driveway and I panicked. I looked around the room and ink was everywhere!

Purple Alert!
My childhood bedroom had two windows. One facing the front part of the house and the other facing the side. My dad always parked in the front and my mom had the side driveway. I used to pretend that my room was a lookout and when I saw that my dad was home I would yell, "Blue alert!". For my mom I would yell, "Red alert!". When I saw that they both were home, I would yell, "Purple alert!".

Goodnight Pluto
I had these tiny Disney toys. They were probably only two inches high. I would play with them and every night I would line them all up on my bedpost and say goodnight to each one, "Goodnight, Mickey... Goodnight Goofy..." One day my mom took me to the beach and I, of course, had all of these toys with me. Later that night I stuck to my tradition of putting the toys on my bedpost. I freaked out when I noticed that Pluto wasn't there. My mom knew I wouldn't be able to sleep so she went all the way back to the beach that night and dug in the sand until Pluto was back home. "Goodnight Pluto... Goodnight Mom" :)

Green Eyes
I always wanted my eyes to be green like my mom.

Creepy House
All of my life, I have been creeped-out by my house. I always had this awful feeling like something was watching me. I have since moved, but to this day, every nightmare I have takes place in that house.

Prankster
I used to put black electrical tape on the kitchen sink hose. That way, when someone turned on the sink, the hose would spray them.

Stepping Stones
Sometimes before bed I would put my clothes on the floor as if they were stepping stones. I knew at night I'd have to go to the bathroom. I would always pretend that the ground was water and the shirts were the only way to the bathroom. On the way back, I used to always run and leap into bed.
